My favorite tree in the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe (Unesco World Heritage, Mountainpark Wilhelmshöhe)
No. 401, a yellow pine
( Since the close down I go for a walk in the mountain park almost every day) A mighty 30 m high tree. It forms a neighborhood with a black pine and a third stately pine, the name of which I do not know yet. The trunk is an expression of striving to the highest altitude and irrefutable foundation in the earth. The bark is light (yellowish) its structure is shaped in infinite variations, but strictly designed according to its theme. The translucent, thinning crown, which can only be seen when the neck is bent far back, shows needles collected in tufts. The tree stands still and motionless, shows me no seasonal changes, I can not see its flowers, it is the same in both summer and winter. The long needles lie on the ground together with the cones. The cones, a little more than the size of a fist, have very pointed spikes at the end of the scales. Pine trees are my favorite trees. In the garden where I grew up on top of a hill, there was a small forest of old pine trees beside the house. We were only able to climb one of them, the largest - the one that the swing supported. This enabled us to reach the branches at a considerable height. Clinging to the trunk, you looked down into the valley and the magpies’ nest on the neighboring pine - much higher. Back at the ground, we were exhausted from the adventure and smelled of pine. The sound of the wind in the crowns of the pines is indescribably beautiful and unique (and sometimes a little scary for kids) - only those who were close to the pines and stood still - know what is meant.
